Your Fire Helmet Shields leather front is built to endure the toughest conditions in firefighting. But with a little maintenance, you can keep it looking sharp for your entire career.
Regular Cleaning
After heavy use, wipe your shield down with a damp cloth to remove soot, dirt, and grime. Avoid harsh chemicals or solvents — they can strip the leather's natural oils and damage the finish. A mild saddle soap works great for deeper cleaning.
Conditioning
Leather is a natural material that can dry out over time, especially when exposed to heat. Apply a quality leather conditioner (like Lexol or neatsfoot oil) every few months to keep the leather supple and prevent cracking. A little goes a long way — apply a thin, even coat and let it absorb.
Storage
When not in use, store your helmet in a cool, dry place. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight for extended periods, as UV rays can fade the leather and lettering over time. If your shield gets soaked, let it air dry naturally — never use a heat gun or hair dryer.
Touch-Ups
If your lettering starts to show wear after years of service, contact us. We can often touch up the paint on your existing shield rather than replacing it entirely.
When to Replace
A well-maintained leather shield can last 10+ years. If the leather starts to crack, split, or lose structural integrity, it's time for a new one. But with proper care, that day should be a long way off.
