Firefighter First, Leather Craftsman Second
Fire Helmet Shields is a family-owned, firefighter-owned shop in Kansas City. Every shield is handcrafted by a working captain with 25 years on the job.

How This Started
I'm Brian Williams. I've been a career firefighter since 2001 — the first few years at Leavenworth Fire Department in Kansas, and the rest of my career at Kansas City Kansas Fire Department (KCKFD), where I'm currently a Captain. Along the way I've earned my Firefighter I and II, Technical Rescue, and USAR certifications.
Fire Helmet Shields started in 2013 for a simple reason: I wanted to buy a new leather helmet shield, and the shop I had ordered from before stopped taking orders. I could either settle for a shield I didn't love, or I could learn to make my own. I learned to make my own.
What started in my garage has grown into a full shop shipping shields and leather goods to firefighters across the country. But the bar has never moved: every piece I ship is built with the same scrutiny I'd apply to my own gear. If it isn't good enough for my helmet, it isn't shipping to yours.

Why the Shield Matters
The helmet shield is the one piece of gear a firefighter makes personal. Your name, your company, your rank — it's what sits on the front of the helmet while you're doing the job, and it's what ends up on the wall when you retire. A cheap shield gets tossed after a few years. A real leather shield gets passed down.
Every shield I make is handcrafted from premium 9-ounce vegetable-tanned bridle leather — the same weight used in saddles and heavy-duty work belts. I design, laser cut, hand tool, laser etch, hand paint, machine stitch on my Cobra Class 3, and edge finish every single shield myself. Each one takes 4-5 hours of hands-on work.
