Chief Fire Helmet Shield
Handcrafted leather chief shields built for the officers running the department.
A chief shield carries weight — literally and symbolically. It's the rank everyone in the firehouse looks to. We hand-cut every chief shield from premium 9oz vegetable-tanned leather and hand-letter the rank, name, and department so it's worthy of the position. Whether you're a battalion chief, deputy chief, or chief of department, we'll build a shield that matches.
Helmet Color & Tradition
In most U.S. departments, chiefs wear a white helmet — the symbol of command. The shield typically features the chief's name, rank designation (CHIEF, BC, DC), and department, with gold lettering as the traditional officer color. Many chief shields incorporate bugles or department insignia.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's traditionally on a chief's shield?
Most chief shields feature the rank designation (CHIEF, BC, DC), the chief's last name, and the department. The center usually carries bugles representing the rank — one bugle for a lieutenant, two crossed for a captain, three for a battalion chief, four for an assistant or deputy chief, and five for the chief of department. Lettering is almost always gold.
Can you incorporate bugles into the shield design?
Yes. We can hand-cut and inlay bugles into the shield design — single bugle for company officers, crossed bugles for chiefs. Send us your rank and we'll build the appropriate insignia into the layout.
Should a chief shield be white leather?
It's a personal preference. Chief helmets are traditionally white in most U.S. departments, but the shield itself can be any color. Some chiefs prefer black leather with gold lettering for contrast against the white helmet. Others go full white-on-white for a cleaner look. Both are correct.
Do you make matching shields for the chief's office?
Yes, we regularly do bulk orders for chief's offices — chief, deputies, and battalion chiefs all matched in layout and lettering. Email us with your team and we'll work out the details.
“I have had two chief style frontpieces made, and without question, these are the best ever! The highest quality and workmanship can be found here indeed. My money was well invested. And these will become heirlooms forever!”Chief Michael L. Kuk, PhD.
