In most U.S. departments, probationary firefighters wear an orange or yellow helmet during academy and the probationary period — sometimes called a 'rookie' helmet. Is a custom shield a good gift for a new firefighter?
It's one of the best gifts you can give. New firefighters get a lot of generic gear and gift cards — a hand-crafted leather shield with their name on it is the kind of thing they'll keep on display for the rest of their career. Spouses, parents, and grandparents are our most common probie shield customers.
Can the shield be ready for the academy graduation date?
Yes — we just need at least 2-3 weeks notice for standard production. If you're inside that window, ask about rush production with a 5-day guarantee. Tell us the graduation date when you order and we'll work backward from it.
What information do I need to order a probie shield?
Just the firefighter's full name, the department they're joining (or the academy if they don't have a department yet), and any rocker text you want — graduation date, class number, etc. If you don't know the department, leave it blank or use 'PROBATIONARY FIREFIGHTER' as a placeholder.
Will the shield work with their probationary helmet?
Yes. Our shields fit standard leather and composite fire helmets used by every major manufacturer. Whether they're issued an orange probie helmet or a black helmet, the shield mounts the same way.
