Which Fire Helmet Shield Should I Get? A Buyer's Guide
Not sure which custom fire helmet shield style is right for you? Here is a breakdown of every shield I build, who it is for, and how to choose.
Brian Williams
Captain, KCKFD · Owner, Fire Helmet Shields
I build 11 different shield styles, and I get asked "which one should I get?" almost every day. The honest answer: it depends on your rank, your department's culture, and your personal style. Here is a breakdown of every shield I make and who it is best for.
The Classic - $109.95
The Classic is my most popular shield for a reason. It works for every rank from probie to chief, every department, and every helmet brand. If you are not sure what to get, start here. Two rockers (top and bottom) with a center area for your badge number. Clean lines, classic look.
Best for: Everyone. First-time custom shield buyers, gifts when you are not sure of the recipient's taste, department bulk orders.
The Crew - $134.95
The Crew is a bigger, bolder shield with wider rockers. It has more visual weight on the helmet. I built this one as an original design and it has become one of my most requested styles.
Best for: Firefighters who want maximum presence. Looks great as matching company shields when the whole rig wants to match.
The Kingpin - $119.95
The Kingpin is the shield I made for my whole crew at KCKFD. It has tall, swooping lines with a skinny profile that looks sharp on any helmet. This is a traditional fire helmet shield shape with a modern twist.
Best for: Officers who want a distinguished look. Popular for promotion gifts and department leadership.
Blackout Edition - $119.95
The Blackout is all black everything: black leather, black lettering, black stitching. The text is readable through embossing depth and paint contrast. Subtle but it hits different.
Best for: Firefighters who want a low-profile, murdered-out look. Understated and professional.
Legacy Passport - $124.95
The Legacy Passport has a Velcro-backed center section that you can swap for different assignments. One shield, multiple configurations.
Best for: Firefighters who rotate rigs, hold multiple assignments, or want accountability-style flexibility.
Thin Red Line - $114.95
The Thin Red Line features an American flag center with a red line. Laser engraved and hand painted directly into the leather.
Best for: Firefighters who want to honor the brotherhood and country. Great for memorial shields and ceremony pieces.
The Solo - $109.95
The Solo is minimalist. No rockers, no department text. Just your number or initials on clean leather.
Best for: Firefighters who prefer a simple, no-nonsense front. Probies getting their first custom leather front. Volunteer firefighters.
The Titan - $79.95
The Titan is my biggest shield and my best value. Maximum presence on the helmet at the lowest price point.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers who still want real handcrafted leather. Department bulk orders where cost matters.
The Galt - $104.95
The Galt has a unique shape you will not see on every rig. I designed this for firefighters who want something different.
Best for: Anyone who wants to stand out from the standard shield shapes.
El Capitan - $109.95
El Capitan is my red leather shield. The red comes from the tannery, not painted on, so it will never fade or rub off.
Best for: Irish-heritage departments. Captains (the name says it all). Anyone who wants a shield that pops with color.
Antique Shield - $144.95
The Antique Shield is hand-dyed and weathered for a vintage look. Each one comes out slightly different.
Best for: Retirement gifts, shadow box displays, honor guard helmets, ceremonial use, and firefighters who want a distinguished, classic look.
