Custom Fire Helmet Shields
Handcrafted leather shields and helmet fronts — built by a working firefighter for the fireground.
A fire helmet shield — also called a helmet front — is the one piece of gear a firefighter customizes with their own name. It carries your company, your rank, and your department. When you take your helmet off at the end of a shift, the shield is what people see sitting on the apparatus floor. When it comes home at retirement, it's the one piece of leather that tells the story of the whole career.
We've been hand-cutting and hand-lettering leather fire helmet shields since 2013. Every shield is built from two layers of 9oz premium vegetable-tanned leather, cut to one of seven traditional shapes, lettered with stamping tools, and saddle-stitched by hand. The owner, Brian Williams, is a captain at Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department with 25 years on the job. Every shield we ship goes out the door with the same scrutiny we'd apply to our own gear.
The shields on this page cover the full range of shapes in the American fire service — the Crew, the Solo, the Passport, the Kingpin, and more. You'll find traditional shields with eagle fronts, Philadelphia-style diamonds, modern clean-line shields, and shield blanks if you want to start from scratch in the shield builder.
Two layers of real leather
Every shield is built from two stacked layers of 9oz vegetable-tanned leather — not a single printed piece. The top layer is cut and shaped, the bottom layer shows through rocker cutouts where your department name and last name sit.
Hand-stamped lettering
No printing, no vinyl, no decals. Every letter is individually stamped into the leather with steel letter punches, then inked by hand. The lettering will outlast the helmet it's mounted on.
Saddle-stitched with waxed thread
The two leather layers are stitched together by hand with waxed polyester thread — the same technique used on horse saddles and high-end leather goods. No glue, no machine stitching.
Built for the fireground, not a wall
Our shields are sized and constructed to be worn on duty. They clear the brim of every major helmet brand (Cairns, MSA, Phoenix TL-2, Morning Pride) and will handle working-fire conditions. If you want a retirement display shield, we make those too.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a fire helmet shield and a helmet front?
+
They're the same thing. On the West Coast and Midwest it's usually called a 'shield.' In FDNY and much of the East Coast it's called a 'front' or 'helmet front.' The product is identical — a leather piece mounted on the front of a fire helmet.
What sizes do you offer?
+
6", 6.25", and 6.75" — measured point-to-point across the widest part of the shield. The 6" is the most common size and fits the vast majority of helmets. If you have a Cairns N6A Leatherhead or similar traditional bunker, you'll want the 6.25" or 6.75".
Will your shields fit my helmet?
+
Yes. We fit all major modern fire helmets including Cairns 1044/1010/N6A, MSA Cairns XF1, Phoenix TL-2, Bullard, Honeywell Morning Pride, and Pacific. If you're unsure, message us with the helmet make/model before ordering.
How long does a custom shield take?
+
Standard production time is 5-7 business days. Rush orders with a 5-day guarantee are available. Bulk department orders take 2-4 weeks depending on size of the order.
Is leather better than plastic or metal?
+
For duty wear, real leather is the traditional choice and holds up well in working conditions if cared for. Plastic shields are cheaper and waterproof but look and feel like a toy compared to leather. Metal shields (stamped aluminum or brass) are durable but heavy and less forgiving in a crash. Most career firefighters we outfit choose leather because it ages well, repairs well, and tells the story of the career.
